How was ASSERT born?

ASSERT (B&H) was founded in 2002 and became a registered charity in 2003. In 2006 the achievements of Assert were recognised by The Argus Charity of the Year award. Many people with Asperger syndrome reach adulthood without their needs being recognised, let alone addressed, because: ...it is often a hidden condition ...it does not fit neatly into any category of statutory service provision. Social isolation is caused by a lack of understanding of the condition. The founders of Assert saw a great need to: ...reduce the isolation of families affected by Asperger syndrome. ...raise awareness of the condition, including the social value of its positive aspects such as fairness, logic and attention to detail. ...give people with Asperger syndrome a voice for their concerns. ...establish ways and means of meeting the needs of those affected.
